Easter controversy

Easter controversy
   This term refers to a controversy in the early Church about the date for celebrating Easter. Prior to theCouncil of Nicaea in 325, the Eastern Church, claiming to follow a tradition from the Apostles John and Philip, celebrated Easter on the fourteenth day of the Jewish month of Nisan, regardless of the day of the week, while the Western Church,claiming the authority of the Apostles Peter and Paul, celebrated Easter on the Sunday following the fourteenth day of the full moon of the vernal equinox. Differences in the way this date was calculated led to further controversies that continued into the sixth century.
